Won an Award? Now SEO It…

Let’s see if I can crank this out on a quick lunch break…

What We Know: This is Awards Season. Every year, in many industries, the end of one year and start of a new year is a time for giving and receiving awards. It’s also the time for reviewing the year with Top 10 and Best Of lists.

What Might Happen: You might win an award! Or get included on someone’s “Best of” or “Top 25” list.

What That Means: Generally speaking, if you win an award, or get included on someone’s list, you’re going to get a link, and, it’ll probably pass ‘link juice’. This is a Good Thing, but …

You Can Make It Better!

If/When you get such an award or are included on a year-end list, after you’re done gloating, get to work! If you just earned a link, you want the page that links to you to become a STRONG page.

So, duh: Link to it yourself! Here’s an example:

Entertainment Weekly magazine has just named the U2 web site I manage as the number four fan site on the Internet. Suh-weet! And so here I am, linking from SBS to the page where I have a link from EW.com. We’ll probably link to it from our U2 blog, too, which is a different URL than where EW links to. And maybe we’ll grab a screenshot and link to it from Flickr … the whole point being to link to the page that links to you and make that link more powerful.

Okay, that’s all, gotta get back to work….

Ya know, Matt, it seems so obvious now that you’ve said it. Sometimes, the best tips are like that!

Congrats on winning that award. Pretty cool! And Merry Christmas to you and your family.
