SES San Jose Day 1 – Afternoon
(playing catch-up here…)
Made it to the “SEM via Communities, Wikipedia, and Tagging” session late Monday afternoon. Good thing I showed up early to get a seat because this one ended up being standing-room only.
There was a lot of general talk about tagging via sites like Technorati and even Flickr (which I’m covering in about 90 minutes in my presentation), but I was most struck by Neil Patel of Advantage Consulting who concentrated on how to get the most out of Wikipedia. One of his points of emphasis was the same as what I say in How to Market on Flickr about not spamming the Wikipedia system, but rather being an active, contributing member of the community. Beyond that, the overall approach he took opened my eyes to the idea that Wikipedia does offer more of an opportunity than I had been giving it credit for … so that’s something I’ll be looking into in the coming days and weeks.
