Five Questions, vol. 2 … Can You Answer Any?

Filed in Miscellaneous by Matt McGee on June 25, 2007 4 Comments

It’s been a while since I did the first round of “Five Questions”, but I’m back now with some more Qs for you to A. I’d love to hear your thoughts on these five questions:

Blogline screengrab1. What do I need to do in order to get a nice little SBS icon to show up in the Bloglines feed list, like Cartoon Barry and Cre8PC in the image here?

2. I saw an article which made the claim that Google would “penalize” (yes, that’s the word the writer used) domains which were about to expire, because spammer activity often involves buying and dropping domains quickly. Now, I’m a believer that it’s better to register domains for longer periods than one year, but I don’t buy this idea of a penalty at all. Your thoughts?

3. If you have your server set up so that domain.com/Page.html and domain.com/page.html dynamically point to the same content, would the search engines consider this duplicate content? (Note that one file name is capitalized and one isn’t.) I’ve seen this on an IIS server recently.

4. Has anyone ever seen a Google Sitelink (you know, those extra 4-5 links that show up under the top listing sometimes) that links to a page deeper than the 1st level?

5. Is there a time limit on having a 302 redirect in place? In other words, if I keep a 302 redirect in place for a long time, will a spider eventually decide that the redirect isn’t really temporary anymore, and should be considered permanent?

Your thoughts are welcome in the comments!

#1 – You need a favicon! First start with a picture/photo/logo and then go to:

    http://html-kit.com/favicon/

This will create a favicon.ico file for you, then drop it in the same folder as your index page. You don’t have to but you can put the location of it in your website, here is some info:

#3 We run a UNIX flavor on our servers and I can change the capitalization on any of the site pages (not blog, it’s dynamic) and it goes to the same page. My GUESS is that Google doesn’t care what the capitalization is, as they don’t care in their search, although they should as I posted recently:

Does Keyword Capitalization Matter to Google or SEO?

    Hope that helps. 🙂

That’s just a favicon?? Wow, okay. I thought it was an image somehow embedded into the Feedburner feed or something like that. Thanks Michael – on both replies. 🙂

    1) favicon
    2) not a chance (just educated opinion)
    3) yes, if it’s a unix server because capitalizations matter. But otherwise, I doubt it.
    4) never paid much attention, but I will now.
    5) good question. We typically change ours to 301s after six months or so.

    1)favicon
2)If a domain goes “pending delete” then it’s removed from the index. Smart registrars never let domains expire 😉
3)No, generally it’s not duplicate content–the engines can figure that out.
4)I’ll try to look for one, but haven’t seen one (yet).
5)I never every use 302s, I prefer to use 301s all the time.
