Drawing the Line on Social Marketing

Filed in Social Media by Matt McGee on September 11, 2006

I don’t mind showing off my photos a bit.

I’m glad to be building a nice little network of friends and business associates.

Go ahead and check me out on MySpace.

You can even check out the music I listen to if you want.

Just don’t expect to ever see my earthly possessions on the Web. For one, it pushes the limits of showing off (“Look at the cool stuff I own!”), and for two, considering how easy it is to find a person’s home address, you’re nuts if you think I’m putting my home inventory online.

That’s where I draw the line on this whole social marketing / alternative SEM thing.

Oddly enough, if you’re in the product-selling (small) business, the kind of word-of-mouth referrals and advertising you can get on a site like ThisNext.com (and others) is probably like discovering gold. Better go check it out….
