SEO Advice: In One Ear and…

Search marketers, you’ve no doubt experienced the frustration of having clients ignore your recommendations and instructions. It happens to all of us. But at the end of the day, you get to go home and forget about it … at least until the next morning.

But not when your spouse is a client. 🙂 If you’ve been reading SBS for any length of time, you know I’m helping my wife with her real estate web site and blog. We sometimes argue like the old, married couple we are; but I smiled today when I saw the headline of her most recent blog post:

How’s that for putting your keywords in the post title? Well done, grasshopper. In one ear and on the blog. 🙂

On a related note, if you’re still not sure about the SEO power of a blog, hers is now landing in the Top 10 for several important phrases:

And since it’s not about rankings but conversions / sales / leads / whatever, we’re also thrilled that the blog has brought in two new clients in the past 1-2 months.

This blogging thing … I think it’s gonna stick around.

Yes, sir. I hear and I heed! It’s kind of exciting when you realize your spouse really does listen to you, huh?

Way to go, Mrs. Matt (sorry, I don’t know her real name…and am worried now that it might be grasshopper?)

    Very good results! Well done!

I am interested to know why you decided to host your wife’s blog on a sub-domain. All the advice that I have read (including from your friend Rand at SEOmoz) suggests that it’s best to host a blog on your primary domain in most circumstances.

Do you think your wife’s website would have seen a similar benefit if the blog had been hosted there? I see it is currently ranking well below the blog. I also noticed that you don’t link to the blog from the website.

What ever you are doing seems to be working. Well done.

We didn’t have a choice on the hosting, Surveyor. The blog and web site are hosted with my previous employer and were both setup ages ago as you see them now — domain and sub-domain.

I’m strongly considering moving them to Dreamhost (where SBS is hosted) and combining everything under the one domain, but that will require more effort and time than I can give it right now.

    Miriam – thank you.

    Cari – yes. 🙂

  5. At Beanstalk we’ve actually written deadlines into our contract, which can void the guarantee if the client takes too long. But with guaranteed services you always have to dot all you Is, and cross all your Ts 🙂
