Local & Social Collide on Facebook

When I speak at the ongoing GetListed.org “Local University” workshops, the primary takeaway from my presentation boils down to this: Your customers are having a lot of local conversations on social media sites, and it’s a good idea to encourage and be a part of those conversations. So it was with a smile on my face that I saw this on my wife’s Facebook wall earlier this week:

local-facebook

There are four local businesses mentioned there; I circled them. And I think each one then also got a follow-up recommendation, too.

The recommendations from friends are great. But how smart would it have been for those businesses to be on Facebook, to be connected to local residents, and to see & take part in this conversation? I bet my wife would jump at the first one to offer her a 10% discount or some such thing. Because, remember, discounts are one of the main things we look for from businesses using social networks.

    Matt,
Agree strongly with the point on the importance of businesses being on social media and engaged.

However on the second point – I think that discounts are important but I also believe the businesses most successfully using social media are highly engaged in spreading good information.

People are looking for great content from businesses – not just discounts. Look at any truly successful site like whole foods and you will find they are providing great info – not just discounts.
