Search Engine Submission

Don’t bother. Search engine submission is useless in this day and age.

(Oh. You want more information? Okay.)

Ignore those emails and offers you get where the guy yells about “submitting your site to the Top 400 search engines for only $49.99.” For starters, there are only four major search engines — the ones that matter most: Google, Yahoo, Ask, and MSN. With those four, you’ve covered 95% of the search activity, if not more. There are some good smaller search engines, too, such as Gigablast. But in all cases, search engines are smart enough now to find you without you submitting your URL.

All you need is a link from another site in the search engine’s index, and the crawler will eventually find you. The better the web site that links to you, and the more often the page where your link appears is crawwled, the sooner you should be found.

So, build your site, get a link from another site — such as a trusted web directory — and sit tight.
